Amsterdam's Welvaren
making history

Founded in 1830, the Netherlands first kindergarden.
"Amsterdam's Welvaren is a blessing to this city and all the parents who live in its neighborhood."

- Stephen Mollet
Founder of Amsterdam's Welvaren
Inspiring the world
In 1864, the Quakers of Dorset England had a plaque made to commemorate the history of
Amsterdam's Welvaren . Today the plaque is housed at the Amsterdam History Museum.
NOBEL PRIZE Speech

In 1948 Amsterdam's Welvaren gained global acclaim when Joel Cadbury used it as a pillar of his Nobel laureate speech. He said, "The house was a symbol for the choices we face in life, and of course the core values we have."

New discoveries
In 2016, the mother of a former student, donated the origianl registry book from the 1800s.

As she said, "It was used as Santa's naughty and nice list all the way into the 1970s."

THE CADBURY PAPERS Project
As caretakers of Amsterdam's Welvaren, our job is to preserve it's history and, as far as it's possible, uncover hidden pieces from the past. In 2017 an ambitious project was undertaken to photograph and catalogue thousands of documents and pictures related to the house and the historic figures who played a role in its creation. The documents were hidden away in the Quaker Library at Haverford College.

Today these documents can be viewed online at: www.cadburyfamilypapers.com

CURRENT Influences
The house has drawn inspiration from artists, architects and house museums around the globe.

Some of the ones that are most prominent include M.C.Escher, Piet Mondrian, Sir John Soane, Pablo Neruda, Gerrit Rietveld, Teylers Museum, Horace Walpole and P.J. Hamer to name a few.

At the same time, we have commissioned wall works from trompe o’eill to wool, with a dollop of Delft to set the atmosphere :)

We have embraced those innovators who rethought how we  experience place. It is the  re-experiencing of space that permeates everything that we do.
